Biography
When he joined the University of Waterloo as an undergraduate student in chemical engineering, all that Vikram coveted was a career in Alberta’s burgeoning petrochemical sector. He interned at Imperial Oil during his first summer break, and upon returning to school, stumbled upon a copy of Juan Enríquez’s As the Future Catches You. He became instantly captivated with biological engineering. His journey since has taken him to Sanofi Pasteur, where he worked on designing next-generation vaccine manufacturing processes; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received his doctoral degree for a thesis on engineering enzymes and bacteria for synthesis of pharmaceuticals; and Harvard University, where he worked on biophysics and biological thermodynamics. As an Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia, Vikram leads a group of researchers working on topics including metagenomics, bioenergy, bioremediation, drug discovery and manufacturing, and health. He has forged strong academic and industrial collaborations in each of these projects, raising over $1 million in research funds. Most recently, Vikram co-founded Metabolik Technologies to apply his expertise and experience to solving the most pressing environmental and economic challenges of the energy industry.
