Biography

I completed my PhD in Human Development and Family Studies, with a minor in Women Studies, at Oregon State University. I have an undergraduate degree in Home Economics, with a major in Family Studies, and a Master’s degree in Family Life Education. I also have a diploma in Early Childhood Development. I am certified as a Family Life Educator (CFLE) through the National Council on Family Relations. My primary research interest focuses on family dynamics related to family rituals and transitions, in particular the transition to marriage. I have also increasingly been studying same-sex couples and LGBT aging issues. My secondary research interests involve older women and healthy aging and qualitative research methods (currently, Dr. Elise Radina and I are co-editing a book about qualitative data analysis). Training workshops on qualitative software (with a focus on MAXQDA) are available through my consulting company, Fada Research Consulting (fadaconsulting@gmail.com). In November 2016, I became the Book Review Editor for the Journal of Family Theory and Review. In this position, I am responsible for finding books for review, (c) finding people to review the books, and (c) editing the book reviews. The Journal of Family Theory & Review does consider its book reviews "scholarship"--Tessa LeRoux, the previous Book Review Editor wrote, "Book reviews can contribute to scholarship if they offer critical analysis and discuss new publications in light of the existing literature" (2015, p. 62). I have a list of books I am looking for people to review, but I welcome suggestions for books from people as well. If you are interested in reviewing a book, please contact me! I have supervised graduate student theses in the following areas: (a) family work, (b) retirement, (c) gay and lesbian families, (d) women and aging, and (e) sexuality education. I have taught MSVU undergraduate courses on families and aging (introductory courses), healthy aging, research methods, social and family theories, women and aging, adult development and aging, retirement, understudied intimate relationships, family life education, and interpersonal communication skills. I have taught graduate courses in research methods (quantitative and qualitative), qualitative research methods, family life education, and family relations across the life course. I have taught many other courses prior to being at MSVU on topics such as child development, family development/dynamics, and women’s experiences in families.
