Steven Laviolette

Biography

 Steve has specialized in building envelope engineering since graduation, starting his career at Suter-Keller (later Keller Engineering). Steve developed quickly at Keller Engineering, quickly becoming a Senior Engineer responsible for all condominium clients, most building envelope investigations, and staff training.  As Senior Building Sciences Engineer, Steve managed the majority of the firm’s contracts, was the lead investigator for building distress problems, was the primary designer for building envelope systems, and was in charge of Technical Audits and Reserve Fund Studies.      Steve started his own firm in 1996, then merged with Paterson Group Inc. in 2004, where Steve continues to provide clients with a full range of services related to building envelope and concrete systems.  Projects completed over the past 25 years involve a wide variety of building envelope and concrete systems, including foundations, balconies, parking garages, brick and concrete masonry, EIFS, stucco, siding, curtainwalls, windows, commercial skylights, flat and pitched roof systems, waterproofing membranes, and air/vapour barrier systems. Types of services performed include design review, acting as Building Envelope Consultant, condition surveys; building envelope investigations, asset management assessments; remedial design of building envelope systems; Modernization Plans (i.e. architectural redesign) for building facade renewal; detailed rehabilitation design & specifications; and site review of remedial and new construction. Building investigations and assessments including a wide range of investigative methods, such as condition documentation, inspection openings, moisture and mould assessments, water tests, thermography and air leakage testing.   EDUCATION   Bachelor of Applied Sciences in Civil Engineering, Co-operative Education Program (Specialty in Structural Engineering), University of Ottawa, 1987 Certified Level 2 Thermographer   LICENCE/ PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS   Professional Engineers of Ontario Board Member, Building Envelope Council - Ottawa Region Board Member, Canadian Condominium Institute, Ottawa Chapter (2007-2013)
