Chairman of Edinburgh Bioquarter Dr. Simon Best is a seasoned global leader, both as a Founder, CEO and Chairman or Board Member of Life Science companies and as a Chairman or Trustee of major industry bodies and public sector institutions, in the UK, USA, Europe, Asia and Latin America. He is also an experienced Angel, Venture Capital and Private Equity investor. Through the 90’s, Dr. Best became a leading international figure – initially as a champion of GM Food technology and then as the CEO of the company formed at the Roslin Institute in 1998 to exploit medical applications of the technology that produced Dolly The Sheep. Dr. Best is a past Vice-Chairman of the US Biotechnology Industry Organisation and Chairman of the UK BioIndustry Association. He built 3 substantial Life Science ventures between 1991 and 2005 – Zeneca Plant Science (Delaware, USA), Roslin BioMed and Ardana (Edinburgh, UK), and between 2010 and 2012 refocused and rationalised a 4th – Aquapharm (Oban, UK), a pioneering marine biotechnology company. Between 2005 and 2010, he was an Entrepreneur-in-Residence for TVM Capital’s MENA Fund in UAE and India and in 2008 co-founded PAR Equity LLP in Edinburgh. In 1999 the World Economic Forum nominated him a Global Leader of Tomorrow and in 2000 a Technology Pioneer of the Year. In 1999, he was nominated as “Science and Technology Venturer of the Year” by the FT. He was awarded the London Business School Alumni Achievement Prize in 2007. He holds an MBA from London Business School and an Honorary Doctorate and B.Mus from York University. In 2007, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 2008, he was awarded an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II and appointed a Visiting Professor of Medicine by the University of Edinburgh. Dr. Best is the Chairman of Edinburgh Bioquarter since 2009, a company in the business of formation, technology transfer. Dr. Best held also the position of Chief Executive Officer at Aquapharm Biodiscovery Ltd. (a company in the sector of drug discovery) from May 2010 to November 2012. Mr. Andrew Bishop Partner and Co-Founder of Bingley Capital Inc. Mr. Bishop is a Partner and Co-Founder of Bingley Capital Inc., and brings over 20 years of experience in advising biotech and health care companies. He has worked on over 100 financing and M&A transactions over his career. Prior to establishing Bingley Capital in 2009, he held senior roles in investment banking, including Head of Health Care Investment Banking at HSBC Securities (Canada) Inc., where he covered biotech, pharma, and specialty pharma companies. He started his career in investment banking focused on companies in Quebec. For the past 9 years, Mr. Bishop has also served as a Director and Chair of Willow Breast & Hereditary Cancer Support, a not-for-profit organization focused on breast and hereditary cancer. Mr. Bishop received an International M.B.A. (Honours) from the Schulich School of Business at York University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Economics from McGill University. He also received his Chartered Financial Analyst designation. Mr. Stefan Clulow Chief Investment Officer and Managing Director Thomvest Asset Management Inc. Mr. Stefan Clulow is Chief Investment Officer and Managing Director of Thomvest Asset Management Inc., a private investment firm. Prior to joining Thomvest, Mr. Clulow practiced law in Silicon Valley and Toronto, Ontario. Mr. Clulow sits on the boards of a number of private companies and charitable organizations. Stefan received a B.A. and an LL.B. from McGill University. He is a member of the State Bar of California and the Law Society of Upper Canada. Mr. Ken Galbraith Managing Director, Five Corners Capital Ken Galbraith joined Ventures West as a General Partner in 2007 and led the firm’s biotech practice prior to founding Five Corners Capital in 2013 to continue management of the Ventures West investment portfolio. Ken is a well-known and active member of the North American life sciences community with over 25 years of experience acting as an executive, director, investor and advisor to companies in the biotechnology, medical device, pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. Previously, Mr. Galbraith served as the Chairman and Interim CEO of AnorMED, a biopharmaceutical company focused on new therapeutic products in hematology, HIV and oncology, until its sale to Genzyme Corp. in a cash transaction worth almost US$600 million. Starting in the biotech sector in 1987, Mr. Galbraith spent 13 years in senior management with QLT Inc., a global biopharmaceutical company specializing in developing treatments for eye diseases and oncology, retiring in 2000 from his position as Executive VP and CFO when QLT’s market capitalization exceeded US$5 billion. He has served on the Board of Directors of several public and private biotechnology companies, including Angiotech Pharmaceuticals (ANPI), Tekmira (TKMR) and Cardiome Pharma (CRME). He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Macrogenics (MGNX), Zymeworks, Augurex and AudienceView Ticketing Software. Ken earned a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) degree from the University of British Columbia in 1985 and appointed a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants of BC in 2013.
