Biography

Dr. Mahmood is an assistant professor at the Department of Gerontology, Simon Fraser University (SFU). Her post secondary education is in design with a focus on environment-behavior relationships. She received her Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2002. Her research focus is in several distinct, yet related areas, within the general area of Aging, Health and Environment. These are: a) Community design and active living for older adults; b) Socio-spatial environments of ethnocultural older adults; c) Gerontechnology, caregiving, mental health and aging in place; d) Environment-behavior relationships in acute- and long term care settings. She is on the editorial board of the Journal of Housing for the Elderly and Housing and Society and has served as a reviewer for the Journal of Aging Research, The Gerontologist and Health Environment Research and Design. Research Interest

Health and built environment with focus on housing for older adults, neighbourhood environment and active living, socio-cultural factors in homecare, and gerotechnology. Current funded projects include: community environment and physical activity in older adults; gerotechnology, caregiving and aging in place and housing for ethnic older adults.
