Biography
Dr. Cheliak has a Ph.D in genetics and an undergraduate degree in Forestry, both from the University of Alberta and broad experience and familiarity with the field of biotechnology at the research and business levels. Dr. Cheliak’s areas of expertise include; forestry, aquaculture, human health in the fields of oncology and neurology, industrial-level viral and bacterial vaccine manufacture, expression systems, human genomics and ethics. Dr. Cheliak has led research teams and has successfully translated results and knowledge generated from research and development into businesses. He has closed numerous deals with big and small companies along with academic institutions and research hospitals. As well, Dr. Cheliak has gained considerable expertise in the translation of highly technical materials to non-specialists and lay audiences, including the investment and finance community. Dr. Cheliak currently serves on the board of numerous biotechnology firms and organizations, including the federal government’s Networks of Centres of Excellence Standing Selection Committee. With this committee, as well as his prior experience, Cheliak has provided several committees with advice and recommendations to the Government of Canada on the funding of large national science and infrastructure programs.
