Biography
Mr. William J. Braithwaite, known as Bill, serves as Chairman and Senior Partner at Stikeman Elliott LLP. He is also a member of the Partnership Board and Executive Committee and former head of its Corporate Group. Mr. Braithwaite practises primarily in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and corporate finance. In addition to acting on some of the most significant cross border merger transactions, he has acted as counsel to major Canadian corporations, boards of directors and institutional shareholders, as well as various governments and regulatory authorities.He speaks and writes extensively on his areas of expertise. He was a "leading individual" in the Corporate/Mergers & Acquisitions practice area in Chambers & Partners' he World's Leading Lawyers from 2003 to 2004. He has been a Director of Real del Monte Mining Corp. (formerly, Consolidated Nevada Goldfields Corp.) since October 1996. He serves as a Director of Centerra Gold Inc. and Charterhouse PSI Investment Corp. He serves on the Board of Directors of Computershare Trust Company of Canada and Canadian Trading and Quotation System Inc. He serves as a Director of Charterhouse AT Trust Inc. at Charterhouse AT Fund. Mr. Braithwaite served as a Director of CNSX Markets Inc. He served as an Independent Director of Charterhouse Preferred Share Index Corp. He was Chair of Ontario Securities Commission Advisory Committee and member of the Ontario Business Corporations Act Advisory Committee. He is a frequent speaker and lecturer on securities law developments. He was a law clerk to Chief Justice of Canada and Assistant Professor and Assistant Dean, Osgoode Hall Law School. He serves on the Governors' Council of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Braithwaite was recognized by LEXPERT as a practitioner "most frequently recommended" in the Corporate Commercial Law, Corporate Finance, Investment Funds and Mergers & Acquisitions sectors. He was recognized internationally and is included in the latest edition of the LEXPERT/American Lawyer Media publication, A Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada. He is a Special lecturer at the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School. He has also been recognized in the International Who's Who of Corporate Governance Lawyers 2004. He is a Member of Law Society of Upper Canada. Mr. Braithwaite holds an LL.M from London School of Economics in 1977, an L.L.B from University of Western Ontario in 1976 and a B.A from University of Windsor in 1973.
