Biography
Janice Odegaard is senior vice president and general counsel of Suncor Energy. In this role, Janice is responsible for all legal matters across the company and works closely with Suncor’s Board of Directors on matters of corporate governance. Janice joined Suncor in July 1995 and has held a number of senior positions within the company including vice president, project services in the Major Projects group, which handles engineering, procurement and construction for Suncor’s major capital projects, and vice president, corporate legal affairs. She is also Suncor’s chief privacy officer and corporate secretary. Prior to joining Suncor she practiced corporate and securities law in Calgary. Janice was named one of the Women’s Executive Network’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in 2011 and 2013, and received the 2011 Women in Law Leadership Award in the category of government or in-house leadership in the profession. She was awarded the Queen’s Counsel designation in 2014. She has served on a number of non-profit boards including the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre and the Legal Education Society of Alberta. She currently sits on the advisory council for Transparency International Canada. She was co-chair of the professional services division of the Calgary and district United Way Cabinet campaign from 2012 to 2015. In 2016, she co-chaired the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association National Conference in Calgary, and was also named a finalist for the Canadian General Counsel Deal Making Award. She has also served as mentor in both the Lilith Professional and Women’s Executive Network mentoring programs.
