Michael O’brien

Biography

Michael O’Brien was appointed to Suncor's Board of Directors in April 2002. He is a member of the audit committee and a member of the governance committee. Mr. O’Brien retired from Suncor in 2002. During his 27 year tenure with the company, he held a number of senior management positions, including executive vice president, corporate development and chief financial officer. From 1992 to 2000 he was executive vice president of Suncor's wholly owned subsidiary, Suncor Energy Products Inc. (formerly Sunoco Inc.). In addition, he held various senior-level positions in planning, business development, marketing, finance, and mining and extraction. Mr. O’Brien is a director and chair of the Audit Committee of Shaw Communications Inc., and is past chair of the board of trustees for Nature Conservancy of Canada, past chair of Canadian Fuels Association (formerly Canadian Petroleum Products Institute) and past chair of Canada's Voluntary Challenge for Global Climate Change. He has previously served on the boards of Teresen Inc., Primewest Energy Inc. and CRA International. Mr. O’Brien holds a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Toronto and a master's degree in business administration from York University.
