Shalon Mcfarlane

Biography

Shalon has been a Technology Management Officer as a member of the Natural Sciences & Engineering Technology Management team at TEC since 2013. Specializing in Intellectual Property, Shalon evaluates technologies and inventions from the University of Alberta and surrounding Edmonton region, develops commercialization strategies (spinoff vs. licensing), and conducts market research to promote technologies to potential licensees as well as drafts and negotiates various commercial agreements. Shalon’s portfolio includes all applications of technologies in Natural Sciences and Engineering, but specifically those in the space of nanotechnology; energy and the environment; materials and compounds; chemistry; and electronics and software. Before joining TEC, Shalon completed her Master of Science in Physics with a focus in Condensed Matter Physics, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Physics, both from the University of Alberta. Her research areas were in nanotechnology and photonics, with collaborations in chemistry and engineering, and a focus on nano-imaging, microscopy and spectroscopy. Shalon enjoys spending time at the gym, and is a competitive weightlifter and nationally ranked powerlifter.
