Biography
Dr. David May graduated with a medical degree in 1985 from the University of London in London, England. He received Certification in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP) in 2016 along with Certificates of Added Competence in Family Practice Anesthesia and Palliative Care. For 25 years Dr. May has provided comprehensive care as a family physician in Powell River, British Columbia (BC), as well as obstetric, emergency, and hospital in-patient care at the Powell River General Hospital. He has special interests in chronic pain and palliative care and provides enhanced services in these areas. Dr. May has held numerous leadership roles with the Powell River General Hospital. From 2008 to 2009 he served as Head of the Department of Anesthesia. From 2000 to 2001, he served as Chair, Medical Staff. He is the Medical Lead in local palliative care and chronic pain projects. In 2012 Dr. May became a Board Director of the Powell River Division of Family Practice and has held the position of Board Chair since 2016. Dr. May is a Board Director of the British Columbia College of Family Physicians and Physician Lead for Shared Care: Palliative Care—a committee that addresses barriers to care and how to reduce burdens on palliative care patients and their families. Since 2016 Dr. May has participated as a member of Doctors of BC’s Geriatrics and Palliative Care Committee. In 2011 Dr. May was awarded the C. Robert Kemp Palliative Care Grant from the CFPC, and in 2016 he received the Award of Excellence in Rural Medicine from the Rural Coordination Centre of BC.
