Biography

Dr. David White is a community-based family doctor in Toronto, where he also teaches comprehensive family medicine at his clinic and at North York General Hospital (NYGH). Dr. White received his medical degree in 1975 and completed his residency training at the University of Toronto (U of T) in 1977. That same year, he received Certification in the College of Family Physicians of Canada. He received his special designation in Emergency Medicine—CCFP (EM)—in 1983. Dr. White became a Fellow of the College in 1995. In 1977, Dr. White began practising clinical family medicine in Sioux Lookout, Ontario, working at the Zone Hospital (now the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre) and flying into remote First Nations communities in northwestern Ontario. He joined the Family Medicine Teaching Unit at Toronto Western Hospital in 1980, and later moved to Mount Sinai Hospital. In 1999, he was appointed Chief of Family and Community Medicine at NYGH, a position he held for 11 years. Dr. White was instrumental in establishing the inpatient Rehabilitation and Progressive Care Unit at NYGH and in co-piloting the creation of the North York Family Health Team. Among his many leadership roles at U of T, Dr. White is a Professor and Vice-Chair in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. He served as Deputy Chair from 2014 to 2015 and Interim Chair in 2016. He also served as Director of Undergraduate Education from 1985 to 1995 and Director of Medical Electives with the Faculty of Medicine from 1987 to 1997. He was a founding member of the North Toronto Research Network and from 2012 to 2014 served as the Interim Director of the University of Toronto Practice-Based Research Network (UTOPIAN), a program that works collaboratively with researchers and primary care physicians in addressing primary health care questions and in translating research findings into practice. From 2011 to 2013, Dr. White served on the Board of the Ontario College of Family Physicians as the representative for Region 5 Toronto Central and Central Local Health Integration Networks. He is a member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada’s Section of Researchers and has been a member of the National Executive Committee since 2013. From 2015 to 2016, Dr. White served as President-Elect and as CFPC President from 2016 to 2017.
