Biography
My current research interests are focused on the application of fracture mechanics and fatigue crack propagation methodology to the study of biomaterials, hard tooth tissues, and adhesive interfaces. Interfacial fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth is determined/characterized using the notchless triangular prism (NTP) fracture toughness test (Ruse et al, 1996). The morphology and chemistry of surfaces of interest are characterized by using both conventional (scanning electron microscopy; energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, confocal scanning laser spectroscopy) and specialized (attenuated totally reflected Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; secondary ion mass spectroscopy) surface analysis techniques. The characterization of commercially available dental materials and the determination of their in vitro performance represent a constant area of interest.
