Biography
Dr. Paul Hasselback is the Central Island Medical Health Officer with Island Health. Since 1993 he has held Medical Health Officer positions in the Interior of BC, Southwestern Alberta, Calgary and Regina. He was the senior executive in public health in both Interior BC and Southwest Alberta for a total of 12 years. He is a specialist in Public Health and Preventative Medicine and family physician who trained in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Paul was in family practice in rural Saskatchewan for four years. He has a master’s of science in epidemiology and is a Clinical Associate Professor at UBC. Paul has 30+ peer reviewed publications and over 130 public health related presentations. In 2000 he was awarded the Canadian Public Health Association award for “an individual who has significantly advanced the cause, legitimized and stressed the responsibility for the state of the art of the public health”. In 2010 was awarded the President’s Award by the National Specialist Society for Community Medine for his contributions related to chairing the specialist society External Communications and Advocacy Committee 2008-2010. Paul chaired the Health Officer’s Council of BC 2010-12 and previously the Alberta Council of Medical Health Officers in 1996-97. He was selected for the UBC SPPH Public Health and Preventive Medicine 2013 Appreciation Award. Paul Hasselback will accept residents in Public Health and Preventative Medicine Family Practice elective rotations are available upon discussion.
