• Indeed, post-settlement processes are known to affect the recruitment of marine invertebrates (Gosselin & Qian 1997;Hunt & Scheibling 1997;Fraschetti et al. 2002;Jones & Ricciardi 2014). The alternative shell features may also have been differentially affected between larger and smaller shells due to shell legacy (Waldbusser et al. 2011a,b), potentially owing to the weak relationships between worm counts and shell morphometrics that are in contrast with other studies (e.g.Clements et al. 2017). It is important to note that we did not use live oysters in this experiment.

• While the spatial and temporal variability of sediment pH and carbonate geochemistry is not well documented, it is clear that substantial variability can occur on both small and large spatial and temporal scales (e.g.Wenzhöfer 1999;Yates and Halley 2006;Zhu et al. 2006; this study). The present study documented temporal variability on a biweekly to monthly timescale in 2012 (Fig. 2), and additional sampling in 2013 found large temporal variability on both diel (Fig. S1) and biweekly to monthly timescales (Clements 2016). Juvenile M. arenaria abundance was also variable both within and between sites in 2012, which is in line with the reported patchiness in previous studies of bivalve recruitment (Evans and Tallmark 1977;Brousseau 1978;Robert 1981;Goshima 1982;Witherspoon 1982Witherspoon , 1984Mölle and Rosenberg 1983;Emerson et al. 1988;Roseberry et al. 1991;Strasser et al. 1999;Miron 2005, 2006).
