Biography

Edmond Lou received his B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Alberta in 1991, 1993 and 1998 respectively. He was employed with Alberta Health Services (formerly Capital Health) from 2003 to 2017. In 2011-2017, he was appointed as a Special Continuing Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Alberta. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Departments of Surgery, Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging, Pediatric and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Alberta. He is a senior advisor on applying ultrasound imaging for scoliosis screening program in WuXi Rehabilitation Hospital, Jiangsu, China since 2016, and the research leader of the Edmonton Scoliosis Interdisciplinary Research Group. He has published over 91 refereed journal articles and 160 conference proceeding papers, and holds 5 US patents. He was the recipient of Innovation – Recognition of Excellence and Achievement in Capital Health (REACH AWARD) in 2007, and one of the 150 Excellence Physicians, Staff and Volunteers at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in 2017. Dr. Lou also received the Best Research Paper Awards given by The International Research Society of Spinal Deformities Conferences in 2014 and 2016. His team is the leading team in the world to apply the ultrasound techniques to assess scoliosis and for orthotic applications. The invention had been reported in both Global News Edmonton, CTV Edmonton Health News, and the Alberta Health services and the University of Alberta web sites in May 15, 2014. Dr. Lou is a member of The International Research Society of Spinal Deformities, The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and an Associate Fellow of the Scoliosis Research Society. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Alberta, Canada.

Research Interest

Research Interests My research interests including low power embedded systems, wireless communications, image and signal processing, and biomedical instrumentation. Low Power Embedded Wireless Systems: Designing low power wireless sensing network devices for both industrial and biomedical applications. Biomedical Instrumentation: Developing an ultrasound, camera, spatial sensors and pressure control platform to assist orthotists and orthopedic surgeons to deliver better treatment for children who have spinal deformities.
