Biography

Biography: Hamzeh Khazaei completed his BSc. and MSc. degrees in Computer Science at Amirkabir University of Technology in 2005 and 2008, respectively. He received his PhD degree in Computer Science from University of Manitoba in 2013. The focus of his PhD research was on analytical performance modeling of cloud computing systems. Dr. Khazaei joined IBM Canada Research and Development Center as a Research Scientist to incorporate big data management in health informatics for the management of neonatal intensive care units. Afterward, he joined York University as a postdoctoral fellow to conduct research on engineering model-based autonomic management systems. He then applied his research in creating a self-managing IoT platform based on microservices at University of Toronto in capacity of a Research Associate. At UofT, his team designed and developed Elascale, which is an scalability and elasticity engine for distributed cloud systems and applications. Currently he is an assistant professor in Software Engineering & Intelligent Systems group at Electrical and Computer Engineering department, University of Alberta.

Research Interest

Research Interests: My research revolves around modeling distributed computing systems for various purposes. Currently my focus is engineering model-based intelligent distributed systems by the way of self-adaptations that includes self-optimization, self-protecting, self-healing and self-configuration. To this end, theories such as queueing theory, machine learning, control theory and petri nets may be leveraged. The applications of my research would be in the management of big data systems (NoSQL datastores and Analytic Platforms), Internet of Things, distributed cloud infrastructure, platform, and applications. Current Research: ● Performance Modeling ● Self-* Properties as-a-service ● Machine Learning in Software Engineering ● DevOps and Microservices ● Virtualization and Containerization ● Management of Big Data and Internet of Things ● Health Informatics and Smart Transportation
