Biography
Jean Buteau belongs to the department of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences Agricultural Food and Nutritional Science from the university of Alberta.
Research Interest
Keywords: Diabetes, Obesity, Nutritional and hormonal regulation of beta-cell mass and function. Our research efforts are aimed at identifying novel molecular mechanisms that govern beta-cell differentiation, proliferation, and survival. The overall goal is to harness the therapeutic potential of these newly discovered targets to stimulate the generation of new beta-cells and to expand and protect the functional beta-cells that still reside in the pancreas of patients with diabetes.

Glucolipotoxicity alters lipid partitioning and causes mitochondrial dysfunction, cholesterol, and ceramide deposition and reactive oxygen species production in INS832/13 beta-cells.

Glucagon-like peptide 1 inhibits the sirtuin deacetylase SirT1 to stimulate pancreatic beta-cell mass expansion.
