Biography

Biography: lsupercritical fluid extraction (SFE) as a technology for environmental applications. My past research activities focused on SFE for the remediation of hydrocarbon contaminated soils and metal contaminated soils. Research also focused on the measurement of the solubility of metal chelates in supercritical carbon dioxide. A new technique solubility measurement technique was developed and solubilities of metal chelates and other compounds have been successfully measured. A model has also been developed to describe the solubility of both organic and inorganic compounds in supercritical fluids. Other past research activities include the investigation of the settling behaviour of oil sands tailings, the extraction of nutraceuticals using SFE and the fate of phosphate in processed kimberlite tailings at the EKATI diamond mine.

Research Interest

currently building a research program that will focus on the use of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) for environmental applications. As part of this program, a pilot-scale SFE system is currently being built at the University of Alberta, in collaboration with the University of Guelph. The main focus of this program is currently the development of SFE for the treatment of drilling wastes and the use of SFE as an alternative method for the extraction of bitumen from oil sand. In addition, research will also investigate the use of SFE for the remediation of metal contaminated and hydrocarbon contaminated soils. Other research projects include tailings management for oil sands and the use of SFE for non-environmental applications (in the food industry and others).
