Biography
Jennifer Kryworuchko’s research examines the organization and delivery of health care services during serious illness. Tragically, some people die without access to palliative care. Palliative care aims to relieve suffering (e.g., confusion, anxiety, restlessness, pain, breathlessness, vomiting) and improve quality of life. She is particularly interested in how inclusion in health decision-making and access to care is shaped by social, cultural, economic and political contexts. We know that palliative care can help people live longer and with a better quality of life. People who are particularly vulnerable to poor health, for example, might experience systemic and/or societal barriers (racism and discrimination), structural factors (e.g., extreme poverty, unstable housing, and a lack of affordable and appropriate care), individual mental illness, and cognitive, behavioral or physical challenges that affect the amount and quality of care. Jennifer’s research intends to make sure all people have the opportunity to influence decisions about their healthcare and receive high-quality palliative care. Her research involves community partnerships to develop and test multi-level interventions, and ensure that findings are meaningfully included in health and social policy, system design and care delivery.
