Biography
Our cities and infrastructure systems are the economic engines of modern society. Infrastructure also provides essential services (energy, transport, water, and communications) that greatly influence social well-being and sustainability. However, infrastructure around the world faces serious challenges due to physical degradation, increasing demand from population growth and risk from climate change. Canada alone intends to invest around $80 billion into public infrastructure over the next decade. This requires long-term planning to strategically invest in priority areas that enhance economic growth, job creation and environmental sustainability. Martino’s research focuses on developing advanced computational models to simulate and analyze the engineering, economic and environmental performance of infrastructure to inform long-term investment strategies. Martino is also a co-director of the new UBC Masters of Engineering Leadership in Urban Systems program, which trains new leaders to plan, engineer and manage our cities infrastructure systems to ensure Canada’s future economic competitiveness.
