Biography

Alessandra Ponte is a Full Professor & Head of Phyllis Lambert International Seminar. Previously, she taught at the Pratt Institute of Architecture in New York (2003- 2008), as well as those of the Universities of Cornell (in 2003), Princeton (1994-2002) and Harvard (1991) in the United States. She was a lecturer in the history of architecture at the University Institute of Architecture in Venice, Italy (1990-1994) where she studied. Areas of expertise: Architecture, History and theory of architecture & Cultural landscapes.

Research Interest

Alessandra Ponte's research focuses on two main areas: The first axis focuses on the concept of the environment in the 20th and 21st centuries, with a particular focus on the Utopias of the 1960s and contemporary experiences of interactivity. On this theme, in collaboration with a team of UdeM students, Alessandra Ponte has already been the curator of the exhibition Total Environment: Montreal 1965-1975 (Canadian Center for Architecture, Montreal, March-August 2009 ) and published an interview with François Dallegret, author of the famous illustration for Reyner Banham's article "A Home Is Not a House" (published on AA Files, No. 58, 2009). In addition, she collaborated (with Thomas Weaver and Laurent Stalder) in the preparation of the exhibition and the GOD & Co catalog: François Dallegret Beyond the Bubble (Architectural Association School of Architecture, London November-December 2011; Zurich Polytechnic School April-May 2012; ENSBA Paris-Malaquais September-October 2012). She was also responsible for the design and organization of the Phyllis Lambert Seminar, Reactive Environments: Architecture, Technology and the Senses, in March 2009 (extracts in: Alessandra Ponte co-editor: "Architecture / Technology / Sense, "Architecture and Ideas, 9, Toronto, 2010); she is preparing a conference entitled Milieu-environnement-Umwelt (autumn 2013, Phyllis Lambert Seminar); and recently completed "Interview with Alessandra Ponte," in Pablo Lorenzo-Eiroa, Aaron Sprecher, Architecture in Training: On the Nature of Information in Digital Architecture, London: Routledge (in preparation, 2013). On the same subject, Alessandra Ponte was responsible for the conception and organization of the Phyllis Lambert Seminar, The Territories of Entropy, in March 2010 (publication of proceedings in Alessandra Ponte, guest editor: "Entropic Territories", Architecture and Ideas, XI, Toronto, 2011); She is preparing a book of essays that will be published by the editions of the Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture in London, Fall 2013. Professor Ponte participated in a series of workshops that took place in extreme environments such as the Atacama Desert in Chile, organized by AA School London and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile ("Holiday", January 2012 and "Chile by Night", January 2013); and in Iceland organized by AHO Oslo, Norway ("Landscapes of Energy", May 2012). She is an Affiliate Visiting Scholar in the Future North Research Team, AHO, Oslo Landscape Architecture School, a 3-year program established on a grant from the Norwegian Government (2012-2015). She also received a grant of $ 25,000 CAN from the Norwegian Government in collaboration with AHO and the School of Architecture University of Waterloo. The grant will be used to visit and study mining towns in northern Quebec including Fermont, Gagnon and Labrador City. The trip will take place in spring 2014.
