Research Interest

His current research focuses on the underwriting campaigns conducted by Sainte-Justine Hospital from the late 1920s to the present, and on the contribution of commercial advertisements for over-the-counter medications to the medicalization of Quebec society between 1920 and 1970. The first project deals with both the rhetoric developed by the hospital (and its publicists) to convince the population to tap into its gussets to support it financially and the material organization of these fundraisers to see how it has evolved over the years, to what extent and from what time it has become professional and how much volunteers (mostly women) and "experts" (usually male) have played. This research is based on two key concepts: the concept of a mixed social economy, which refers to the interweaving of private and public financing modes of assistance and health institutions, The second project intends to track advertising campaigns for certain over-the-counter medications to analyze the evolution of body and health discourses and the representations they convey. The initial assumption is that the medicalization of the society was not only the work of the doctors and the state who were at the forefront of public health campaigns, but also the pharmaceutical companies that capitalized on the societal health and wellness concerns to organize the marketing of their products, contributing to the reinforcement of new standards in these areas. More generally, this research seeks to highlight the links between health concerns and the rise of consumerism,th century.
