Research Interest
Christmas Alain's research focuses on social policy and federalism in comparative perspective, on politics in Canada and in Quebec and, more broadly, on the differences between the left and the right in our democracies. I am interested, in particular, in the public policies that affect the main of these different, namely the distribution of income between citizens (policies to fight against poverty, income security policy to ensure minimal financial support to all, labor market policies). In recent years, I have worked in particular on the anti-poverty strategies adopted by EU member states and by provincial governments in Canada. I was also interested in the recent changes in Canadian federalism (fiscal imbalance, bilateral and multilateral agreements on labor market policies, provincial policies on Aboriginal peoples). All these works proceed from the idea that, in a democracy, politics serves first of all to contrast distinct conceptions of social justice.
