Research Interest

Dufour Pascale work mainly on social movements and collective action in comparative perspective. In my research, I propose to consider the collective actors (political parties, unions, groups and networks more informal) as major players in political life, even if they do not evolve directly on the institutional ground but invest more money. Informal public spaces, such as the street, and not only for the state or institutions, but also for the people or their allies. Political news has brought the analysis of collective action and social movements back to the heart of the concerns of political science: how do movements emerge, why and with what effects? What are the conditions that allow a collective actor to last? What is the role of political protest in the transformation of societies? Does an increase in protest actions mean that representative democracy is sick or has reached its limits? Her research emphasizes rather the complementarity of the different types of political action, to see the continuity that can exist between the collective action of protest type, the action of type lobbying and the partisan action. In Her recent work, I show that the creation of militant gatherings such as social forums (global or local), if they participate in the implementation of a political culture that values ​​direct democracy and the search for consensus, are also a pragmatic response to local needs and a generation-specific repertoire of collective action. Her current research also attempts to highlight the theoretical added value of the analysis of social movements and collective action in political science, which leads us to seriously consider the question of conflicts and power relations and not to to hesitate to turn our researcher's gaze towards little explored territory, sometimes on the margins of our societies.
