Research Interest

The three major areas of Marcel Fournier's research are: 1) Social Theory and History of Sociology . Since writing his doctoral thesis under the direction of Pierre Bourdieu, he has devoted much of his research to the history of social sciences. His early work focused on the social sciences in Quebec, as seen in his book L'Entrée dans la Modernité. Science, culture and society in Quebec (1986), three chapters on pioneers in the social sciences and sociology. Then he turned to France, gaining international recognition for his work on the French School of Sociology and in particular his two masterly biographies of Marcel Mauss and Émile Durkheim, which were published by Fayard (Paris) and translated in several languages. He also edited Durkheim, Lettres to Marcel Mauss (PUF) in collaboration with Philippe Besnard, Marcel Mauss, Political Writings and he is currently finishing, in collaboration with Jean Terrier, the edition of the manuscript of Marcel Mauss on The Nation (PUF). 2) Sociology of the university system and researchHe has conducted studies on various facets of the university system and research in Quebec and Canada: conducting a special issue of Sociology and Societies on Social Structure and Science (1975), leading a book on Science and Medicine in Canada. Quebec (IQRC, 1987), surveys on the evaluation criteria for research in the social sciences, sciences and arts. 3) Sociology of culture . He published two books in English in collaboration: 1 st in collaboration with Michèle Lamont a book that became a textbook in cultural sociology in the United States, Cultivating Differences , Symbolic Boundaries and the making of InequalitiesUniversity of Chicago Press, 1992; the second in collaboration with Arnaud Sales, Knowledge Society, Creativity and Communication , Sage, 2007. He has also conducted research on the conditions of access and success in the career of artists in Quebec and he is currently conducting a comparative study (Canada and United States) on "University and Architecture" in collaboration with architects France Valaelthem and David Covo.
