Research Interest
Jacques Lachapelle is an architect, professor at the School of Architecture of the University of Montreal where he has been teaching since 1982. He has been in charge of the School since June 2015. Doctor of History from Laval University, he is also a graduate of the Université de Montréal where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Architecture and a M.Sc.A. in development, option History and theories. Jacques Lachapelle has been working for many years in the field of Canadian and Quebec architecture. Much of his research focuses on the history of Quebec architecture in the 19th and 20th centuries. His doctoral thesis was published by the University of Montreal Press under the title "The Metropolitan Fantasy - The Architecture of Ross and Macdonald". More recently, he has devoted himself to the study of the work of J.-Omer Marchand, the first Canadian architect to graduate from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He has also contributed to numerous heritage assessments. He is interested in architectural design and more specifically in the delicate question of architectural intervention in an existing environment, subject of research entitled "Innovation and conservation". He chaired the 2012 Montreal Heritage Council until his appointment to the direction of the School of Architecture.
