Research Interest
Philippe Gauthier's research interests lie at the intersection of the themes of design, sociology and anthropology. Without neglecting the analysis of the design process, he has mainly invested in the study of the concept of design and the role of the designer, and this, within the framework of a critical analysis of contemporary society and forms of standardization involved in modern democracies. His questions are now being deployed in various fields: (a) codesign and public consultation schemes; (b) consumer support and advice systems; (c) post-secondary education in design. From these three fields, Philippe Gauthier develops a reflection on the place of experts in democracy and analyzes the relationship between normalization and ordinary practices.
