Research Interest
Seymour Lee Joseph Mars's research focuses on political violence. In particular, I am interested in the dynamics of armed conflict and the organization of violence in civil wars. Some questions are of particular interest to me: Why do the political consequences of conflict vary? How can we prevent the recurrence of violence after the wars? How do some societies get bogged down in prolonged periods of violence? My theoretical approach stems from a socio-institutional perspective. My research is both macro and micro in a comparative way. I combine statistical analysis of conflict databases with empirical data collected in the field in violence-affected societies such as Somalia, South Sudan, Abkhazia and Nagorno-Karabakh. Areas of expertise: Political violence, Civil wars, International Security & Separatism and self-determination.
