Biography

Tomás Dorta is the Director, Design Research Laboratory, Hybridlab Tomás Dorta, architect and practicing designer, graduated as an architect at the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas in 1991, and in 1993 undertook graduate studies at the Université de Montréal. He obtained his Master's degree (1994) and Ph.D. (2001) by studying the impact of virtual reality as a visualization tool on the design process. His research interests include the mechanisms of the design process and co-design as well as the development of new design techniques and devices using virtual reality. His research has been heavily funded by the major government research funding agencies, both at the Quebec (Fonds de recherche sur la société et culture: FRQSC) and Canadian (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council: SSHRC and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation: CFI). His research has been presented in various international scientific conferences and published in the proceedings of these conferences, including ICSID, ACADIA, CAADRIA, eCAADe, EuropIA, SIGraDi, CAADFutures, ICDC, HMI and SIGGRAPH as well as in scientific journals such as Design Studies, International Journal of Design Science and Technology and International Journal of Architectural Computing. As a teacher, he began his career as a lecturer at the School of Design at the University of Montreal in 1997. He became an assistant professor in 2003 and an associate professor in 2009. He teaches at M.Sc. A, option Design and complexity and gives workshops in industrial design on new technologies, collaborative design and bionics.hybridlab.umontreal.ca ). Tomás Dorta has a background as a practitioner architect and designer. His research interests include the design process and co-design using new technologies and the development of new techniques and devices of design in the virtual realm. He obtained his Ph.D. (2001), studying the impact of virtual reality as a visualization tool in the design process. His research has been extensively funded by Canadian Federal and Provincial Research Institutes and published in several international scientific conferences and scientific journals. As a design educator, Tomás Dorta joined the School of Design of University of Montreal in 1997 where he is now associate professor. He teaches design research and computer graphics courses and design studios related to new technologies, design collaboration and bionics.Hybridlab . Research Interest

Tomás Dorta's research interests focus on the design process and codesign with new technologies as well as the development of new design techniques and devices using virtual and augmented reality (computer-aided design, imaging techniques). computer modeling and visualization). In particular, he studies the concepts of collaborative design and interaction and experience design as well as the applied bionic approach in design.
