Antoni lewkowicz
Professor
Geography, Environment and Geomatics
University of Ottawa
Canada
Biography
Prof. Antoni has been researching questions relating to the permafrost environment for almost 40 years, working in the Yukon, the Canadian High Arctic, NWT, Labrador, northern Norway, Svalbard and Antarctica. He obtained his B.Sc. in Geography from the University of Southampton (UK) and then moved to Canada where he undertook an M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Ottawa under the supervision of Hugh French. He worked for 2 years in an engineering consulting company, then took up an academic position at the University of Toronto. He stayed there for 12 years and returned to Ottawa in 1994 where he is Professor in the Department of Geography. He has published numerous papers in international journals and conference proceedings, have edited five books, and given more than 200 conference presentations on permafrost science. He has supervised more than 20 graduate theses on permafrost-related topics and he is a Fellow of the Arctic Institute of North America and of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. He was Editor Permafrost and Periglacial Processes, the premier international journal in the field, for 6 years and he is currently President of the International Permafrost Association. In 2006 he was named Professor of the Year in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ottawa for excellence in research, teaching and academic service. He became Dean of the Faculty of Arts in 2009 and ended his term in 2015.
Research Interest
Prof. Antoni's research is focused on the impacts of climate change on the distribution and thermal state of permafrost. He use field techniques such as ground thermal monitoring, electrical resistivity tomography, and low level imaging using drones to examine the impacts of environmental change.
