Biography
Harpell Montgomery (Monty) is of Mi'kmaq ancestry from the Eastern Shore area of Nova Scotia, although he has resided in Western Canada for most of his life. Over the past 20 years, Monty has worked with Provincial and First Nations governments, non-profit Aboriginal organizations, and he has held faculty appointments at two universities. He currently holds an Assistant Professorship with the University of Regina Faculty of Social Work in Saskatoon. Monty has held positions as the Executive Director of the Saskatchewan First Nations Family and Community Instiute, and as the Manager for Program and Policy Initiatives at the Caring for First Nations Children Society of British Columbia. He has direct practice experience as a Child Protection Worker with the Ministry of Children and Family Development in British Columbia and has also worked as a Child Protection Practice Analyst with the Services to Aboriginal Children and Families Division of that Ministry. His professional experience also includes social assistance policy manual revision and development for a First Nations government, administration of Social Development and and Post-Secondary programs for another First Nation in Northwestern BC, and curriculum devlopment in the areas of child protection and First Nations social policy. In regards to First Nations Child and Family Service Agencies, Monty has been instrumental in the planning and development of three First Nations Agencies two in Northwestern BC (serving 14 and 8 First Nations respectively) and one on Vancouver Island (7 First Nations).

Indigenous social policy analysis; First Nations child welfare practice; and distance learning with Aboriginal adult learners.
