Biography
Marcia Calkowski has conducted research on religion, ritual, performance, transnationalism, and medical anthropology in Tibetan refugee communities in India, Nepal, and Switzerland. She has published articles and book chapters on such topics asTibetan performing arts and ritual, the recognition of reincarnate Tibetan lamas, Tibetan folklore, Tibetan notions of causality, anthropological approaches to Buddhist societies, Tibetan performing arts in transnational contexts, and is currently completing a book on the recognition of reincarnate lamas in Tibetan exile communities. She teaches courses on anthropological theory, anthropology of religion, medical anthropology, gender, ethnography of the Himalayas, ethnography of Southeast Asia, and symbolic anthropology.
