Shadia Drury

Biography

Shadia B. Drury is Canada Research Chair in Social Justice; Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada; Director of the Masters Program in Social and Political Thought; and Professor in the Departments of Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Regina. Drury has been a steadfast critic of the gurus of the neoconservatives (Leo Strauss, Allan Bloom, Alexandre Kojeve, and Irving Kristol). She is author of The Political Ideas of Leo Strauss, (updated edition, 2005), Leo Strauss and the American Right (1997), and Alexandre Kojeve: The roots of Postmodern Politics (1994). Her most recent books have focused on religion and politics. In Terror and Civilization: Christianity, Politics, and the Western Psyche (2004), she documents the deleterious influence of Christianity on Western thought, including the thought of Christianity's staunchest critics - Nietzsche and Freud. In Aquinas and Modernity: The Lost Promise of Natural Law (2008), she shows how Aquinas betrays the theory of natural law in favour of a politics of salvation, which threatens political order then as now.
