Research Interest
"Soil health, biogeochemistry, and crop nutrition in horticultural systems: A significant challenge which faces us today is the need to create a food system which provides nutrition to > 9 billion people. To say this challenge is complex is an understatement, yet we must meet this challenge, and in a way that does not compromise vital ecosystem services that are responsible for supporting life (i.e., nutrient supply & recycling, greenhouse gas sequestration, water filtration) largely provided by healthy soils. Horticultural systems provide a unique opportunity to evaluate this challenge because it represents a nutritious food source, yet soil & crop management is often very intense which risks compromising ecosystem services. Therefore, my research program focuses on understanding the functioning of ecosystem services in horticultural systems, with the goal of developing more sustainable production practices. I am especially interested in soil health issues, biogeochemical cycling (nitrogen, phosphorous, and carbon dynamics) and crop nutrition as influenced by production practices (fertility regimes, crop rotations, crop residue management, cover crops, amendments) and climate."
