Biography

Dr. Carvalho is currently an Associate Professor of Psychiatry working at the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health (CAMH). Dr. Carvalho obtained a specialist degree in psychiatry from the Brazilian Psychiatric Association after completion of psychiatry residency. He also completed a doctorate in medical sciences at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). He was elected vice-chair of the section of private practice psychiatry of the World Psychiatric Association (2015-2016) and  also a member of the board of councilors of the International Society of Bipolar Disorders (2016-present).  Dr. Carvalho is currently an Associate Professor of Psychiatry working at the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health (CAMH). Research Interest

Dr. Carvalho's main areas of research interest are in mood disorders, the reciprocal interactions between severe mental disorders and somatic conditions, evidence-based psychiatry and meta-research. His research has been funded by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, by the NSRF (European Union), and by the Greek Ministry of Education. Dr. Carvalho has lectured in several international conferences, and his research has been presented in many international meetings. Dr. Carvalho has authored or co-authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications in journals like World Psychiatry, JAMA Psychiatry, Schizophrenia Bulletin, American Journal of Psychiatry, BMC Medicine, and Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics. Dr. Carvalho co-edited six books in psychiatry, including three books published by Oxford University Press. Editorial comments on two of these books have been published in high-impact journals (Fava GA. Book received. Psychother Psychosom. 2017;86:320-321 and Freedman R. Dr Carvalho is on the editorial board of several peer-reviewed journals including Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, Frontiers in Psychiatry, and Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience.
