Biography

Vaughn Betz received the BSc (EE) degree from the University of Manitoba (with distinction and University Gold Medal) in 1991, the MS (ECE) degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1993 and the PhD (ECE) degree from the University of Toronto in 1998. He co-founded Right Track CAD in 1998 to commercialize his research into Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) architecture and Computer-Aided Design; Right Track CAD was acquired by Altera Corporation in 2000. Dr. Betz held a variety of positions at Altera from 2000 to 2011, including Senior Director of Software Engineering leading 90 research and development engineers. In 2011 he joined the University of Toronto as an Associate Professor. Dr. Betz is one of the architects of Altera’s Quartus II CAD system and of the Stratix (I – V) and Cyclone (I – V) FPGA families, and holds 70 U.S. patents. His research interests are in the areas of improved architectures and Computer-Aided Design tools for programmable integrated circuits, and novel applications of programmable silicon.
