Research Interest
Dr Brian Baker is a psychiatrist whose research interest over the past two decades has been the psychiatric aspects of cardiovascular disease. There are two enduring themes: firstly, the impact of marriage and job on sustained blood pressure and secondly, depression in patients with coronary artery disease(CAD). My colleagues and I have demonstrated a link between marital adjustment and left ventricular mass index over 3 years and between marital factors and ambulatory blood pressure over 3 years in mild hypertensives. We have showed an interaction between job strain and marital cohesion over one year in both normotensives and mild hypertensives. Regarding depression and CAD, I have participated in various studies, including the sertraline antidepressant heart attack trials and the multicentred Canadian cardiac randomized evaluation of antidepressant and psychotherapy efficacy study(CREATE) which was published in JAMA in Janurary 2007.
