Edgar Hockman

Biography

Dr. Hockmann's academic focus is on the development and teaching of point of care ultrasound in the clinical setting. To this end he has pursued an advanced degree (University of Toronto Master Teacher Program). He also holds American board certification for perioperative echocardiography and is a testamur for the Examination of Special Competence with the American board of echocardiography. At the University of Toronto, Dr. Hockmann has been a pioneer in the education of point of care ultrasound within critical care and anesthesia. He developed, deployed and peer tested the first point of care ultrasound curriculum within the division of critical care medicine. He has developed and offered the first point of care ultrasound elective rotation for critical care medicine and anesthesia. He deployed the first hospital based curriculum for point of care ultrasound for anesthesia trainees at the University of Toronto and is currently involved in the process with others to develop and deploy a multi-site, holistic competence and portfolio based curriculum for point of care ultrasound for the anesthesia trainees. Dr. Hockmann has established a reputation as an expert in the field of point of care ultrasound as is demonstrated by over 20 invited lectures at the national level. He is a writing member of the Canadian Training Guidelines for point of care ultrasound education and maintenance of competence. He holds six resident-voted teaching awards in the fields of anesthesia and critical care medicine. Dr Hockmann believes in developing and providing meaningful clinical instruction to already graduated and practicing clinicians. He serves as core faculty for the Emergency Critical Care Airway Management course. ECCAM is a not for profit course which provides the cognitive approach and skills to providers who deal with the emergent airway.
