Irving Rosen

Biography

Irving B. Rosen graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine for his undergraduate studies and went on to pursue general surgical training at the University of Toronto. He subsequently undertook fellowship at the Memorial Centre for Cancer and Allied Diseases in head and neck disease. He has been a founding member of the International and American Societies of Endocrine Surgery and has long participated in their academic activities, supported by clinical research in this area. He is a professor in the Department of Surgery and has been a long-standing member in the Department of General Surgery at the Mt. Sinai Hospital and University Health Network, as well as a consultant emeritus at the Princess Margaret Hospital in head and neck cancer. Ongoing academic interest in medical history is a recent activity. Dr. Rosen has two named lectureships delivered annually at Mt. Sinai Hospital, the Rosen/Rasch Lecture in Endocrine Surgery and the Rosen/Daniels Lecture in Surgical Oncology, both funded by appreciative patients.

Research Interest

Clinical research has been for long carried out in disease of the thyroid and parathyroid glands, as well as the lymphatic system in the head and neck area. There has been a particular interest in enhanced diagnosis of thyroid disease by ultrasonography and fine needle aspiration biopsy, with particular interest in the detection of cancer. The use of ultrasound and fine needle aspiration as applied to thyroid disease has been particularly pioneered.
