J. Roy Gillis

Biography

J. ROY GILLIS is an associate professor in the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is a past recipient of the Teaching and Education Award from Division 44, the Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues, of the American Psychological Association. His research interests include developing models of the psychological impact of hate crime victimization and same-sex partner abuse. He has written extensively about the impact of homophobia on society, and conducts research on the teaching of sexual orientation diversity within educational systems. He is also active in health promotion research, especially HIV prevention research, HIV health literacy, and the prevention of classroom bullying. Professor Gillis has published over 25 articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as many chapters in texts. He is active in international gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues, and serves as the representative of the Canadian Psychological Association for the International Network on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Concerns, and Transgender Issues in Psychology. He is also the founding editor of the open-access journal, the Canadian Online Journal of Queer Studies in Education.
