Research Interest
Dr. Laing is a prosthodontist and immunologist who specializes in research and clinical treatment pertaining to the causative agents of "dry mouth" (xerostomia or hyposalivation) such as various auto-immune disorders (in particular Sjögren’s Syndrome), from medication usage (of which over 1000 are associated with dryness), as a result of HIV/AIDs, or having been treated with immuno- or radiation therapy for head-and-neck cancers. With a dry mouth comes devastating effects to the quality of life including a unique characteristic of dental decay and associated microbiome; difficulty speaking, eating, swallowing, and tasting; and compromised oral health.
