Biography
Mark Chignell holds a Ph.D. in mathematical psychology from the University of Canterbury and a Masters in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Ohio State. He was Assistant Professor in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Southern California from 1984 to 1990. He joined the Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Toronto as Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering in 1990. He is currently Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto, with appointments in the Faculty of Information and in the Department of Computer Science. Research Interest
Professor Chignell’s research focuses on human factors and user interface design, with particular interest in healthcare, aging, telecommunications, and driving applications. He has co-authored books on expert systems and intelligent databases and written papers on topics such as innovative user interfaces, hypertext, and information retrieval. His research has been funded by the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), TELUS, IBM, Bell University Laboratories, CIHR, the GRAND National Centre of Excellence, the AGE-WELL National Centre of Excellence, and the Ontario Centres of Excellence. He was the General Chair of ACM Hypertext 2010 held in Toronto in June 2010. Currently, Professor Chignell is working to evaluate the subjective quality of experience when viewing online video, modeling likelihood to recommend and likelihood to churn based on online video experience. Other research projects he is working on include serious games for cognitive assessment, and the development of interactive activities for people living with dementia. He has received three IBM faculty awards.
