Biography
Emmanuel N ikiema , Associate Professor of French and Linguistics, is currently Ch air of the Depart ment of Langu age Studies. P rof. Nikie ma c ompleted a PhD in Lingu istics at the Universit é du Québec à Mo ntréal (1992); he jo ined the Unive rsity of Toronto in 1994 after a two- ye ar rese arch fellows hip at Laval Unive rsit y. He has se rve d as visiti ng scholar and i nvited professor at se ve ral instit utions, includ ing t he Unive rsity of C hica go (2000), the CN RS ( 2001) and t he Université de Prov ence in Fran ce (2002 ), Kwa nse i Gak uin U niversi ty ( Japan, 2007 ) and Ch onbu k Natio nal Unive rsity (Sou th Ko rea, 2011). Prof. Nikie ma’s curre nt rese arch focuse s on syllab ic repres entat ions and the ph onolog y of Cr eole langu ages; he has pub lished a monograph on French phonology and mor phology (Brouss eau & Nikie ma 200 1) and s everal art icles in major lingu istic jo urnals such as Lingu a and the Journal of Pidgin and Cr eole Languages . He is currently Asso ciat e Editor of Mosaic (a refereed journal for langu age teachers) and s erves as rev iewer and/ or member of editorial boards of num erous lingu istic journals.
