Biography

Paul Schabas is a partner at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP in Toronto. He has a broad litigation practice with an emphasis on media and defamation, constitutional and public law. He has been counsel on many Charter cases dealing with freedom of expression, equality rights, judicial independence, fundamental justice, and search and seizure, including several seminal cases in the Supreme Court of Canada. Paul frequently acts for major Canadian and international media organizations in court challenges and defamation cases. He is currently the Treasurer (President) of the Law Society of Upper Canada. A Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Paul is a Past President of the Canadian Media Lawyers Association, Pro Bono Law Ontario, and a former Chair of the Law Foundation of Ontario. He continues to sit on other Boards, including the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and the Canadian Journalism Foundation. He has published many articles, and frequently speaks on media and Charter issues. Paul received an LL.B. from U. of T. Law School in 1984.
