Biography
Dr. Rita Kandel is a clinician-scientist and Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Canada. She is a Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, cross-appointed to the Department of Surgery and a member of the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering and Director of Collaborative Program in Musculoskeletal Sciences at the University of Toronto. She is a Fellow of Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. Rita is a Director of the Bioengineering of Skeletal Tissues Team, which consists of a multidisciplinary group of investigators, including engineers, biologists, stem cell biologists, and clinicians whose work focuses on regenerative medicine. Her research interest is in the bioengineering of tissues for articular cartilage repair and intervertebral disc replacement. She is an Associate Editor of Cartilage and a member of the Editorial Board of Osteoarthritis and Cartilage. She has published over 200 papers and multiple book chapters. Dr. Kandel's clinical expertise is in the diagnosis of soft tissue and bone tumors. Her research interest is in regenerative medicine and the musculoskeletal system and the mechanisms regulating tissue repair.
