Saulo Castel

Biography

Saulo Castel, MD, PhD, FRCPC is a general psychiatrist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and an assistant professor of Psychiatry in the Division of Adult Psychiatry and Health Systems at University of Toronto. He is the Medical Director of the Toronto Mental Health and Addiction Acute Care Alliance and the director of the Inpatient Unit at Sunnybrook. Saulo received his medical degree, completed his residency in psychiatry and received his PhD in Medicine (area of Addictions) from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. He came to Canada in 2001 as a post-doctoral research fellow of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto on the topic of Concurrent Disorders. His scholarly work is focused on health systems, psychiatric epidemiology, quality improvement, continuous professional education in the area of mental health and addictions. Research Interest

Saulo Castel, MD, PhD, is a psychiatrist with research background in Addictions, Mood Disorders, and Clinical Psychopharmacology. He is a member of the Health Systems Program, of the Dept. of Psychiatry. He is currently engaged in research on Concurrent Disorders, i.e., the complex comorbidity between Addictions and other Mental Health Disorders, with particular emphasis on Mood Disorders; from the Epidemiological, Health Systems, and Clinical perspectives. He is involved in the analysis of the recent Canadian Mental Health Survey (CCHS 1.2) and interested in developing models to better understand the interplay between those conditions. He is also engaged in the development of screening and assessment processes for dealing with Mental Health Disorders among people with Addictions, with the ultimate goal to improve recognition, management and outcome of comorbid conditions. He is proficient in Portuguese. He is based in the Whitby Mental Health Centre, where he carries on his clinical work.
