Sherif Hanna

Biography

Dr. Sherif S. Hanna is a surgical oncologist with a special interest in Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary tract (HPB) Oncology. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University in 1970. After moving to Toronto in 1970 and finishing his internship, he was accepted into the Gallie Program for training in General Surgery at the University of Toronto (U of T) in 1972. Dr. Hanna completed his surgical training at the U of T in the specialty of General Surgery in 1976. Following completion of his training in General Surgery, he was awarded the Gordon Richards Fellowship for training in surgical oncology at the Princess Margaret Hospital (1976-1977). He then became the first General Surgery Trauma Fellow at the new Sunnybrook Trauma Unit (1977-1978).Subsequently he completed a fellowship in liver surgery and liver transplantation at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver, Colorado with Dr. Tom Starzl (1978-1979). His fourth and final fellowship was spent training in portal hypertension with Dr. Dean Warren at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia (July-December 1979). He returned to the University of Toronto to join the staff of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in January 1980 where he has practiced HPB surgical oncology until the present time. In addition to his surgical practice, his research interests include investigating the outcomes of Liver, Pancreatic, Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancers. From 1992-2002 he served as Head of the Division of General Surgery at Sunnybrook. From July 2001- April 2012 he served as Head of the Surgical Oncology Program at the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Dr. S. Hanna is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto.
