Research Interest
The primary focus of my research is on the mass transfer of metallic and volatile elements in geologic fluids with implications for the formation of various types of ore deposits and volcanic degassing. My research program has three foundations: 1) High-pressure/temperature laboratory experiments aiming at the determination of ore metal and volatile element solubility and partitioning systematics in magmatic and related hydrothermal systems; 2) Direct observation of geologic ore-forming systems, in particular magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits. A key aspect of these studies is the use of silicate melt, sulfide and fluid inclusions in minerals to reconstruct the compositional evolution of these phases in the ore-forming magmatic and hydrothermal systems; 3) Computational calculations to predict metal complexation in high-temperature fluids, and to combine experimental data and thermodynamic models with geologic observations to quantitatively understand the formation of ore deposits. The ultimate goals are to improve exploration criteria for mineral deposits and, at the same time, advance the use of gas chemistry in volcanic eruption forecasting.
