Biography

Materials Today ‘Materials in Society’ Plenary Lecture Linda Nazar, FRSC, is a Chemistry professor, Senior Canada Research Chair in Solid State Energy Materials and Distinguish Research Professor at the University of Waterloo, Canada. She is cross appointed to the Electrical Engineering and Physics departments. She is a member of the Fellow of the Royal Society, and is an Officer of the Order of Canada.     View full bio She is known particularly for her work on solid state energy storage materials, with topics that span Li-S and Li-O2 batteries; Li-ion, Na-ion, Mg-ion and Zn-ion batteries, solid state electrolytes, and energy materials nanotechnology.  She is a founding member of the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology. Prof. Nazar received her B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. She then received her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Toronto in 1986, and was an Exxon postdoctoral fellow at the Exxon Research Labs in Annandale, N.J. Soon after, she joined the faculty at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo Ontario Canada. She is a member of the Joint Centre for Energy Storage Research (USA), and the BASF Academic Electrochemistry and Battery Network (Germany).  She is the recipient of the Battery Research Award from the Electrochemical Society, the IUPAC Distinguished Women in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering award; and the International Battery Association award.  She was a Moore Distinguished Scholar at the California Institute of Technology in 2010, and delivered the 2013 August-Wilhem von Hofman Lccture to the German Chemical Society.  She has spent sabbaticals at UCLA; the Institute for Materials in Nantes, France; the CNRS in Grenoble, France; and at Caltech.  She is on the Web of Science’s 2014, 2016 and 2017 Highly Cited Research List, and their 2014 Most Influential Minds.
